Ecuador's Petroleum Basins & Corridors

Oriente Basin (Cuenca Oriente)
Ecuador's hydrocarbon engine in the Amazonian provinces of Sucumbíos, Orellana, Napo, and Pastaza. Historic giant fields include Shushufindi, Sacha, Lago Agrio, Auca, and Libertador, yielding medium crudes (~24° API) and heavier napo-grade accumulations.
ITT Complex - Block 43 (Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini)
Located in Yasuní National Park in eastern Orellana province, holding significant heavy oil reserves (~14°-16° API). Subject to ecological preservation directives and phased decommissioning timelines.
Trans-Andean Pipeline Infrastructure (SOTE & OCP)
The Sistema de Oleoducto Transecuatoriano (SOTE, ~360,000 bpd capacity, state-owned) and Oleoducto de Crudos Pesados (OCP, ~450,000 bpd, private/state transition) transport crude across the Andes mountains from Nueva Loja/Lago Agrio to the maritime export terminal at Balao, Esmeraldas.
Downstream Refining Capacity
Anchored by the Esmeraldas Refinery (110,000 bpd capacity) on the northern Pacific coast, the La Libertad complex (45,000 bpd) on the Santa Elena peninsula, and the Shushufindi topping plant (20,000 bpd) in the Amazon.

Oriente & Napo Export Crude Benchmarks

Oriente Crude (~24° API, ~1.5% sulfur) is Ecuador's primary medium export blend, shipped primarily through the SOTE pipeline. Napo Crude (~19° API, ~2.0% sulfur) represents the heavier Amazonian grade, transported through the OCP system. Both crudes trade at differentials linked to U.S. Gulf Coast and Latin American medium/heavy sweet/sour crude indexes.
