Venezuela's Major Petroleum Basins

Orinoco Heavy Oil Belt (Faja Petrolífera del Orinoco)
Stretching across the southern Eastern Venezuela Basin (Boyacá, Junín, Ayacucho, and Carabobo blocks), the Orinoco Belt holds the world's largest accumulation of extra-heavy crude oil and bitumen (typically 8° to 10° API), upgraded or blended at the José Antonio Anzoátegui Industrial Complex.
Maracaibo Basin (Lago de Maracaibo)
Located in Zulia State in western Venezuela, this historic basin produces medium and light sweet-to-sour crudes alongside associated natural gas through extensive offshore lake platforms and coastal fields.
Eastern Basin & Offshore Gas (Maturín & Mariscal Sucre)
Encompassing Monagas and Anzoátegui states as well as offshore Caribbean and Atlantic blocks (including the giant Perla gas field in the Gulf of Venezuela and Dragon/Patao fields off the Paria Peninsula).
Paraguaná Refining Complex (CRP)
Situated on the Paraguaná Peninsula (Amuay and Cardón refineries) and complemented by El Palito and Puerto La Cruz, forming one of the largest installed refining hubs in the Western Hemisphere.

Merey 16 Benchmark & Market Dynamics

Merey 16 (~16° API, ~2.5% sulfur) is Venezuela's flagship export crude blend, produced by blending extra-heavy Orinoco crude with lighter domestic crudes or imported diluents/naphtha. Because it requires complex coking and hydrotreating units, Merey trades at a structural discount to light sweet benchmarks such as Brent and WTI.
